Mayor Mamdani, in his Executive Order 07, folded Community Affairs Units, The Public Engagement Unit, Mayor’s Office of Ethnic and Community Media, Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, NYC Service, Community Boards, into the new Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement (OME).

Tascha Van Auken was appointed as its inaugural commissioner.

“The Office of Mass Engagement is about taking that ethos and making it part of how government works,” Van Auken said. She said the office will focus on “organizing participation at scale, strengthening feedback loops so public input shapes policy, and building the relationships and systems — human and digital — that make long-term co-governance possible.”

Van Auken wrote in 2022 that her Working Families Party was critical in stopping Republican candidate Lee Zeldin against incumbent Kathy Hochul.
