June 1, 2026 is the deadline to require homeowners to start using the single-source City approved Otto trash bin at 25-gallon to 45-gallon size. It’s heavy compared to the cheaper $5 20-gallon bins that many households use.
I tried ordering it online via Home Depot, but was told that the 25-gallon size cannot be delivered. According to Home Depot, it usually it means that it will not be restocked

Called Otto at 855-692-2467. The number was disconnected. Contacted its info@otto-usa.com address, and was told, “The information you received is incorrect. Home Depot remains active with the 25-gallon trash bin. However, stock is limited as more New Yorkers purchase bins. We are in regular contact with DSNY and with Home Depot, who is restocking each day, with supply increasing as we get closer to the June deadline.”

Decided to buy it in person from at a Home Depot 4 miles away that has stock. Without a car, I had to drag it through subway and onto two buses. With receipt on hand, BIN NYC website recommended that the reimbursement be filed online.
At the website, it asks for Department of Finance SmartFile online account. I have used online before, so I logged in using my existing email, yet my property does not show up. It also requested a Voucher #.

How do I get a voucher number? Called 311, and was told that it was sent out to qualified homeowners back in October 2025! I don’t remember getting it. The 311 operator guided me to contact Department of Finance via 311 to get a voucher #.

Again, I need to log in to the same account that did not display my property. Decided to to mail it in.
Expect theft of NYC trash bins after June 2026. I am paying 10 times more than my current trash bin, and it’s harder to drag to the curb than other closed lid bins I have used.
I encountered obstacles and difficulties buying it. It’s heavier for sanitation workers, and the bins have an orientation instruction (lid opening street/bar and wheels house). Moreover, I live in an area that has little or no rat infestation. Why am I subjected to this?
