68 Street is wide. If northbound drivers did not compensate early enough turning right before the end of the street, parked cars on the narrower Caldwell Avenue would be struck. Avoiding parking there, neighbors telling each other.

Caldwell Avenue was a two-way street, so it is wide enough to have two rows of cars: the main row for those turning right, and a secondary row for those turning left. Removing two parking spots at the end of the Avenue would encourage drivers to leave more maneuverable space for those turning left.
When cars merge into LIE service road from 58 Avenue, drivers look left at approaching cars. If service road cars are held up at the 69 Street traffic light, drivers would speed on the service road ignoring the stop sign and possible pedestrians crossing from drivers’ right.
Traffic volume is high during rush hour. Adding a second traffic light and making feeder roads one-way help, but those improvements beget other problems.
